Rock Hill, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won the 2006-07 South Atlantic Conference Athletic Excellence Award, taking the award for the first time in school history. Wingate won two conference regular-season titles and placed in the top four in six other sports.
The SAC Athletic Excellence Award is presented annually to the member athletic department that earns the highest overall finish based on final regular season standings in each of the 14 conference-sponsored sports. Points are based on final tournament standings in the sports of men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf and women's golf. The trophy is presented at the SAC Annual Business Meeting at the conclusion of each year.
The Bulldogs won the women's basketball regular season championship outright and shared the crown in volleyball. Wingate finished tied for second in football and softball and finished third in women's cross country and women's golf. The men's basketball team tied for third and the men's cross country team finished fourth.
Wingate finished the school year with 81.5 points.
Catawba College finished second for the second year in a row. The Catawba Indians finished with 80 points. Catawba won the men's basketball championship and finished tied for second in women's basketball.
Newberry College finished in third place, the highest finish in school history. The Indians won the football and women's golf championships and finished second in women's tennis and women's basketball.
Four schools - Carson-Newman, Lenoir-Rhyne, Presbyterian and Tusculum - tied for fourth place, all with 73 total points.
Carson-Newman, last year's champion, were champions in men's soccer and women's soccer.
Lenoir-Rhyne won the league title in volleyball and softball and came in second in men's soccer.
Presbyterian won conference championships in men's tennis, women's tennis and men's golf.
Tusculum picked up 41.5 points in the spring to move up to the fourth place tie. The Pioneers won the baseball championship, and had second-place finishes in men's tennis, men's golf, women's golf and women's soccer.
Mars Hill garnered 60 points to finish eighth. The Lions were conference champions in men's and women's cross country.
Lincoln Memorial University, in its first season as a South Atlantic Conference member, finished with 29 points. The Railsplitters were eligible for championships in seven of the conference's 14 sports this year. Their best finish was a second place in women's cross country and a third place in men's cross country.
