Martina Moo Young received the first-ever Wingate University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Leadership Award during Wingate’s recent athletic awards ceremony in the LaVerne Banquet Hall on the Wingate campus. Each year, the Wingate University SAAC Leadership Award will honor a student-athlete who has made significant contributions to the efforts of Wingate’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with this special award.
Moo Young won the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for women’s golf for the third year in a row in 2006. She has a 3.872 GPA as a marketing major. She is a two-time All-SAC selection. She served as chairperson of the Wingate Student Athlete Advisory Committee. In this capacity, she helped organize Make-A-Wish fundraisers, Thanksgiving Food Drives and United Way Day of Caring events.
This season, Moo Young led the Bulldogs to a first-place finish at the St. Andrews Invitational by winning the individual title. She placed sixth in the Bulldog Invitational Tournament, helping Wingate finish fourth overall in its home tournament. Her year-by-year scoring averages included 85.00 (freshman), 82.35 (sophomore), 90.00 (junior) and 87.55 (senior).
As a freshman in 2002-03, she became the first player in Wingate women’s golf history to shoot all her rounds in the 70s and 80s. As a sophomore, she tied for first at the Anderson Invitational during the fall of 2003.
A very active member of Wingate’s campus, Moo Young served as a resident assistant for two years, helping mentor freshman students. She earned Wingate University President’s List (3.8+ semester GPA) honors five times and Dean’s List honors three times.
