The Bulldog Club wishes to recognize student-athletes who represent the true spirit of Wingate University. The Bulldog Club wants to honor student-athletes are loyal and loves Wingate.

A consistent goodwill ambassador for the University, the Bulldog Club Spirit Award winner should be someone who has represented the athletic department with class on the field of competition, in the classroom and around the community. The Bulldog Club Spirit Award winner is proud to wear the blue-and-gold.

Athletic excellence is not a requirement, but rather sacrifice, dedication and teamwork are the main criteria for this award. The Bulldog Club Spirit Award should be a graduating senior who has contributed to a Wingate athletic team for at least three years. This person truly puts team above self.

2007 Winners
Jim Garnham, lacrosse
Danielle Thompson, volleyball
Chelsey Wilson, cross country

The spirit of Jim Garnham can best be summed up by the phrase he used on a daily basis at practice. He would say “Every day is a great day to be a Bulldog.” He is truly one of the “Wingate success stories” we love to talk about. He struggled mightily his first two years academically. He now has over a 3.0 GPA and was elected a lacrosse team captain for three years by his teammates. He has served as a referee for the Wingate intramural program and acted as Victor E. Bulldog this past football season. This past year, his senior season, Garnham’s athletic services were lost due to a knee injury. This did not slow him down as he quickly became another assistant coach for the lacrosse team. This past weekend he showed up at halftime to cheer his teammates on to a conference championship on day after reconstructive knee surgery. Jim Garnham truly does bleed Blue and Gold.

In her final season as a senior, Danielle Thompson played a completely new role for the Bulldogs. Previously in her career, she was a strong hitter, even leading Wingate to a SAC championship as the tournament MVP her freshman season. This past year, due to severe foot problems, Danielle was in a boot all week, usually did not practice and took the boot off at game time.

In this new role, Thompson was a key factor as a captain and as a star defensive player, leading Wingate to another SAC championship (and a third trip to the NCAA Division II tournament). Throughout the season, Thompson’s optimism never wavered. She encouraged her teammates through thick and thin. Her can-do attitude will be missed. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Thompson is a solid student who will attend nursing school in the fall.

Chelsey Wilson finished in the top 50 in all the races she participated in, including an 11th place finish in the Queens University of Charlotte Invitational. Wilson finished 50th in the NCAA Regional event with a time of 26:18.

Chelsey Wilson is the “IRON WOMAN” of Wingate University Cross Country; a four-year letter winner, she has never missed an invitational, a championship meet, or a 6 am morning practice! She has ran in the 3-6 slot on the team throughout the years, always just missing all-conference honors and it was her dedication in that supporting role that was instrumental in the 2004 team qualifying for the NCAA meet. This season she receives the Coaches Appreciation Award for her leadership and dedication – she was the glue that bonded the team.

Ms. Wilson is a member of the leadership fellows who consistently exhibits class in all settings (i.e.., on the field, in the classroom, and around the community) and she is a true scholar athlete having been consistently listed on the Presidents List maintaining a 3.87 cumulative GPA. Currently she is completing an internship with the Habitat for Humanity in Monroe where she works for the Assistant to the Family Services Coordinator.

Finally, Ms. Wilson has demonstrated service to the university in a variety of forums; e.g., Photograph Editor for The Gate (i.e., yearbook) and student supervisor for the DPC. She has served in a leadership capacity in a variety of organizations; Vice President and Treasurer of the Bulldog Running Club, and Student Government Representative. She has been a staff writer for the school newspaper, and served on the advisory committee for Final Exam 6K. Finally, the spring of 2006; she served as the assistant coach in charge of distance runners on the track team at Piedmont High School.

Ms. Chelsey Wilson is the definition of a “GOODWILL AMBASSADOR” for WINGATE UNIVERSITY and the most deserving of the Bulldog Club Spirit Award!
