Ann Hancock Scholarship Award

The Ann Hancock Scholarship Award honors current University of North Carolina at Wilmington head women’s basketball coach Ann Hancock, who earned many athletic and academic honors during a very distinguished athletic career at Wingate University. The scholarship is awarded annually to a female student-athlete who has completed her sophomore year and has best demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, and campus leadership.

Anna Atkinson, basketball

Anna Atkinson was named the SAC Scholar-Athlete for the 2006-07 season. Atkinson also earned second team All-SAC laurels. Atkinson has a 4.00 GPA as a biology major. She was the 2005-06 SAC Freshman of the Year, and was named to the NCAA Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team. This year she finished second in the league in assists (5.2 apg). Atkinson led the league in steals (2.3 spg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3). The 5-6 floor general was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III first team. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. In addition, Atkinson was named Wingate’s Freshman Chemist of the Year. On campus and in the community, Atkinson has volunteered with various charitable fundraisers, including St. Jude’s Hospital and Crime Stoppers. She has donated child care service to a disabled child. Atkinson is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pre-Professional Health Care Organization and Wingate University Biology Club.
