The Enquirer-Journal Freshman Male Athlete of the Year Award  

The Wingate University Athletic Department is very appreciative to the Enquirer-Journal for their support of all our athletic endeavors. We are especially thankful for their willingness to support the Freshman Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards.

2007 Winner
Gustavo Chagas, swimming

Gustavo Chagas is the first National Champion in the school’s senior college history, as he won the 200 Freestyle in Buffalo (March 2007). Chagas is a six-time first team All-American and also was named honorable mention All-American once in his first year with the Bulldogs. A seven-time All-Blue Grass Mountain Conference performer, he was a five-time BGMC champion at the 2007 meet. He holds three conference records and eight Wingate records. He is a Special Olympics Swimming venue volunteer.
