Debra Savino joins the Wingate University women’s basketball coaching staff in the summer of 2007. Savino was an assistant women’s basketball coach at nearby Queens University of Charlotte in 2006. She has also been a Physical Education teacher and the head basketball and field hockey coach at Charlotte Country Day since 2001 and the Camp Director for basketball and field hockey since 2002. Savino was named the Mecklenburg County field hockey Coach of the Year in the fall of 2006.

Savino received her Bachelor of Science degree in Government from Clark University in Worcester, Mass. At Clark, Savino participated in two Final Fours in basketball. Also, she was a member of two state championship teams in field hockey. Savino earned her Masters of Science in Physical Education at Winthrop University.

Savino has loads of coaching experience at many different levels. She was the head coach of the Charlotte Heat, a semi-pro team in the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League. Also, Savino was the head basketball coach at Charlotte Country Day for five seasons.

In addition, Savino has attended numerous coaching clinics to continue her professional development. She attended the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Conference/Final Four each of the past four years. Also, she attended Coach K’s Coaching Academy at Duke University in 1997. Savino participated in WBCA/Adidas Coaches Clinic with Pat Summitt and Billie Moore in 2000.

“Coach Savino brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our staff,” Wingate head coach Barbara Nelson said. “She has been an assistant at the college and high school levels as well as a head coach in high school and AAU basketball. She is an accomplished floor coach and has extensive knowledge in training and conditioning.”

“Coach Savino and I have worked together previously with great success and I am excited that she will be joining Wingate’s basketball program,” Nelson added. “Coach Savino will be planning and implementing Wingate’s weight and conditioning program along with many other basketball duties.”

Savino has also spent time as an ACC field hockey official. Furthermore, she served as the Vice-President of the Carolina Field Hockey Coaches Association for three years. In addition to her experience as a certified NCAA field hockey official, Savino has spent time as a lacrosse official as well.

A graduate of Lake Region High School (Naples, Maine), Savino was inducted into the LRHS Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. She won the Carl Bolick Coach of the Year award at Charlotte Country Day School in 2004. Under her watch, CCDS won the NCISAA field hockey state championship in 2005. While an assistant coach at Providence Day School, Savino helped then-head coach Barbara Nelson lead the Chargers to the NCISAA state championship in basketball (2001).
