Following a 36-hole qualifier, the women’s golf team was ready to start the season. We headed to New London, N.C. to play at Old North State golf course. Old North State is a private golf course that is ranked as one of the Top 10 courses in North Carolina. The course was in great shape and the weather was great on the first day. We normally play this course in February…we were excited to play it with better temperatures. We play the course from about 6000 yards. On the first day our team total was 328, putting us in second place with one day remaining. We normally improve our scores on the second day, so we were looking to take a few strokes off our scores.
The second day of the
tournament proved to be a little tougher than we expected. There was more wind,
making certain holes tougher than the previous day. Our scores came in a little
higher than we would have liked (341), but we did manage to hang on to second
place for the tournament. Freshman Ashley Denton made the All-Tournament team in
her first event as a Bulldog. Old North State was a good experience for the
team’s first match. We will now work on some things and continue to get ready
for our next match at Tusculum (Oct. 1-2), where we will hopefully improve our
scores and bring home a first-place finish.
