This week has been one of the most challenging weeks on the soccer field that I have ever experienced; but I honestly have enjoyed every minute of it. If one examines our results…it looks as if we are in a slump, but I think this is the best team we have had since I have been here!
Once we start taking our chances, the results will change very quickly. We go through fun, intense practices each day, working to improve our task cohesion. We have several new talented players; now the challenge is bringing together all of our talent and connecting our styles of play into one (style). South Atlantic Conference matches are right around the corner; we are looking forward to the strong competition.
School is going good so far; classes are pretty tough but I’ve been able to manage my time to keep up with all the work. Lately, we have had a couple of away games. Luckily, professors at Wingate understand and help us as much as possible. The whole team brings their homework with them on the bus, so it makes it so much easier with study groups and tutors.
Last Wednesday (Sept. 12), when we played UNC Pembroke, my dad came down and surprised me. It was the first time I’ve seen him since he was deployed to Afghanistan in April.
Recently, the team has been participating in several team (building) activities that have been really fun. Last Friday night (Sept. 14), we had a team dinner at the seniors’ apartment in the Jefferson at Wingate (apartment complex). It was great….we had pasta, garlic bread and salad. I think this strong team spirit will help us down the road.
This Saturday is our first SAC home match against Newberry. The team is looking for a win on Wednesday (Sept. 19) to help the team’s morale and confidence. We played well on Monday against Chowan but we were unable to put the ball in the net. The positive thing is that we are creating those chances and I think it is only a matter of time before we hit top gear. I have faith in my team and I know these past struggles will only make us stronger and more difficult to beat in the conference.
