Eagle
Chase Golf Club
EAGLE CHASE GOLF CLUB
Eagle Chase Golf Club is located in northern Union County, nestling on the
trailing edge of the Uwharrie Mountains and surprising visitors with mountain
vistas, elevated tees, rolling fairways of Bermuda carpet and undulating Bent
grass greens. The course was drawn by South Carolina designer Tom Jackson and
constructed to maintain the integrity of the terrain. Greens are sited in
valleys and on hilltops, some protected by sand bunkers or water hazards and
some wide open to invite your best shot.
When strong winds blow from
the northwest, Eagle Chase is a bear, but it mellows significantly in a soft
southerly breeze. With few truly level lies, golf at Eagle Chase is a mental
exercise as well as a physical challenge. A strong maintenance and enhancement
program ensures year-round golf of unusual quality open to the public.
Eagle Chase is the home
course of two truly outstanding golfers. Cliff Cunningham sets the pace for
senior golfers. Cliff is a six-time North Carolina Senior Amateur Champion
between 1994 and 2002. In addition, he is the 1997 United States Senior Amateur
Champion.
Among our young
golfers, Sean Moore learned the game at Eagle Chase and won the North Carolina
Junior title in 2001 and the Carolinas Junior Championship in 2002. As a
freshman golfer at Wake Forest, Sean was medalist at the 2004 Atlantic Coast
Conference Championship played at Old North State Golf Club. Both players still
enjoy the challenges which Eagle Chase brings to golfers of every age and
ability.
The Wingate University men’s
team plays the Championship Tees at Eagle Chase, stretching to above 6,700 yards
on the hilly terrain. The women’s team plays a combination of White and Gold
Tees, measuring approximately 5,900 yards. Eagle Chase and Wingate provide full
practice facilities for the University teams, including a driving range with
target greens, chipping area, practice sand bunker, and putting green.
Since 2001, Wingate and
Eagle Chase have hosted the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate
Tournament, honoring a much loved Wingate golf coach. This event attracts
twenty-four of the leading NCAA golf programs. The men and the women experience
the challenges of “The Chase” and battle each other in stroke play competition.
THE LAYOUT
#1
Eagle’s Nest
A dogleg turning left, OB left and
right, the green is well guarded with sand but a possible birdie for a fast
start, measuring 520/479/435, par 5, handicap 16.
#2
Watery Graves
The drive from an elevated tee must
land in a valley between Richardson Creek and a parallel pond, measuring
412/387/364, par 4, handicap 2
#3
Foxy Lady
A short and easy tee shot between water
hazards lands on a slippery green, measuring 176/136/94, par 3, handicap 10
#4
Birdie Lure
A moderate tee shot to a plateau leaves
a short iron to an elevated, slopping green, measuring 363/333/261, par 4,
handicap 18
#5
Hourglass
A lay-up downhill to the hole’s
narrow waist, defined by deep gulches, followed by a steep uphill carry to the
sand-guarded green, measuring 383/341/291, par 4, handicap 6
#6
Uwharrie Vista
From the highest point on the course,
the tee shot carries unto the valley green, flanked by water and sand,
overshadowed by the Uwharrie Mountains in the distance, measuring 191/147/110,
par 3, handicap 8
#7
Highland Trek
A long straight drive into a generous
landing area raises the question of hitting the green in two. Anything less must
contend with strategically placed fairway and greenside bunkers, measuring
516/491/417, par 5, handicap 14
#8
Elephant Back
The rolling fairway crests on a hilltop
plateau, giving a view of the oval green protected by a deep massive sand trap
right, measuring 412/370/293, par 4, handicap 12
#9
Hilltop Crown
A challenging drive over a deep valley
must reach the hilltop, leaving an approach to a well-bunkered, slopping green,
measuring 411/369/302, par 4, handicap 4
#10
Devil’s Bunker
A moderate length drive into a sharp
dogleg left, sets up an accurate pitch to carry the deep bunker onto a shallow
green with OB beyond, measuring 376/342/286, par 4, handicap 15
#11
Gambler’s Delight
A carefully placed long drive leaves a
200 yard water carry to reach the green for an eagle putt, or a safer approach
around the lake fronting the green, measuring 533/510/449,par 5, handicap 5
#12
Hit ‘n Hope
This tee and green are carved into a
hillside, requiring a long accurate tee shot alongside lurking water on the
right and a master’s touch on the slippery green, measuring 220/194/133, par 3,
handicap 3
#13
Big Cut
A drive over water into a short dogleg
right, with water continuing to parallel the fairway into the green, measuring
334/305/215, par 4, handicap 17
#14
Slippery Slope
A wide open, downhill landing area
invites a big drive, but the approach shot must reckon with a green sloping away
that is protected by sand front right and a falloff into trees to the left,
measuring 411/374/322, par 4, handicap 9
#15
Mountain Climb
Another big drive challenged by
Richardson Creek paralleling left, then a second shot sharply up to a hilltop
perching green with waste behind, requiring both length and accuracy, measuring
413/378/316, par 4, handicap 1
#16
Venus’s Flytrap
A short hole, easy to reach, but a
double-tiered green can be treacherous to putt, measuring 152/117/90, par 3,
handicap 11
#17
Roller Coaster
The drive carries rolling terrain,
leaving a side hill lie for an approach to a large, elevated green, protected by
mounds and a large bunker front left, measuring 377/336/291, par 4, handicap 13
#18
Homestretch
A picturesque finishing hole, dogleg
left with a Civil War graveyard on the right corner. Heavy bunkering requires an
accurate approach to a front opening green to reward an aggressive shot. The
green undulates subtly but a birdie is a possibility to cap a successful round
of golf, measuring 523/501/471, par 5, handicap 7
