Wingate,
N.C.----Wingate University has named Gary Curneen (class of
2003) as its new head women’s soccer coach, vice-president and athletic
director Steve Poston announced today. Curneen replaces Andy
Thompson, who resigned to pursue other opportunities.
In addition, Poston has named associate athletic
director and head men’s soccer coach Gary Hamill as director of
soccer. Curneen will report to Hamill in his new position.
“We are thankful for Andy Thompson’s contributions to
our athletic department,” Poston said. “He did an outstanding job with our
women’s soccer program. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Curneen has served two seasons as
assistant men’s soccer coach at Wingate University. A four-year letterman
for Hamill’s Bulldogs, Curneen assisted in all aspects of recruiting,
practice and game management.
“We are proud of Gary Curneen and his
accomplishments,” Poston said. “We feel very confident that he will provide
quality leadership for our women’s soccer program. He has an exceptional work
ethic. We look forward to him leading our team to the top of the SAC standings."
Curneen brings a full resume to his new
position. He has served the Union County Soccer Association as a team trainer
for various age groups (U-9 to U-16). He has been an assistant director in the
Olympic Development Program for the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA),
directing all aspects of training for U-11 girls.
Curneen possesses an “A” coaching
license from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). He was a
marketing intern for the Boston Bulldogs of the A League and the Boston
Renegades of the W-League for two summers.
“We will play attacking soccer,” Curneen
said. “I have learned much from coach Hamill; we will pattern our style after
the men’s team. It is high-intensity soccer.”
“We will go to the ball and press the
issue,” Curneen added. “I think we will be exciting to watch and difficult to
defend. We will play an up-tempo style and utilize our speed as much as
possible.”
Hamill is proud of his pupil. “Gary
Curneen understands soccer,” Hamill said. “His work ethic is second-to-none.
Gary brings an intensity to the game that is evident from the moment you meet
him.
As Curneen’s mentor, Hamill has had a
unique opportunity to watch Curneen grow and mature as a student, player and
coach. “Gary Curneen understands Wingate University soccer and the high
standards we expect from him both on the field and off the field,” Hamill said.
“I am thrilled he has decided to take this position.”
