Wingate
University graduate Gary Curneen (Wingate class
of ‘03) enters his third season as head women’s soccer
coach in the fall of 2007.
In
2006, the Bulldogs went 11-8 overall with a 3-4 SAC
ledger. The highlight win for Wingate during the 2006
season was a 2-1 win over South Atlantic Conference foe
and NCAA number four Tusculum. The Bulldogs established
a home-field advantage, going 8-2 on the pitch at the
Wingate University Soccer Complex.
Midfielder Lisa Service earned All-SAC honors for
the second consecutive season. Also, defender Heather
Schlick was once again named to the ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-America® first team.
During
his first campaign, Curneen led the Bulldogs to an 11-9
overall record during the 2005 season. Wingate competes
in the very tough South Atlantic Conference.
Curneen
served two seasons as assistant men’s soccer coach at
Wingate University prior to taking over the reins of the
women’s soccer program. He assisted in all aspects of
recruiting, practice and game management. As a Bulldog
student-athlete, Curneen earned four letters in men’s
soccer for head coach Gary Hamill.
In
addition to his coaching ledger at Wingate, Curneen has
served the Union County Soccer Association as a team
trainer for various age groups (U-9 to U-16). He has
been an assistant director in the Olympic Development
Program for the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association
(NCYSA), directing all aspects of training for U-11
girls.
Curneen possesses an “A” coaching license from the Union
of European Football Associations (UEFA). He holds the
premier diploma from the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA). Curneen was a marketing
intern for the Boston Bulldogs of the A League and the
Boston Renegades of the W-League for two summers.
Curneen
has posted 11 wins each in his first two seasons. He
believes the business-like approach the 2007 team is
taking to this season is second-to-none. “Our mentality
is a big strength,” Curneen asserts. “We have been
working on achieving our goals every day since the
beginning of the 2007 spring season.”
