Dr. Merkle joined
the Wingate University faculty in January of 2000, and became the
FAR during the 2004-05 school year. She is an Associate Professor in
the Sport Sciences Department, teaching the science-based courses
for physical education, teacher education and athletic training
majors. Her main duties in the Wingate Athletic Department include
certifying academic eligibility of transfer student-athletes from
two-year and four-year institutions, as well as certifying
continuing academic eligibility of current student-athletes. The
Faculty Athletics Representative plays a key role in the oversight
of the athletics program, and works to ensure the academic integrity
of the athletics program and the welfare of student-athletes.
Before coming to
Wingate, Dr. Merkle worked in Houston, Texas at NASA – Johnson Space
Center working in the areas of neuroscience research and astronaut
healthcare.
Dr. Merkle
graduated in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in Movement and Sport
Sciences from Purdue University; in 1994 with a master’s degree in
Kinesiology from the University of Maryland; and in 1997 with a
doctoral degree in Physical Education from the University of
Houston. |
