Kristin Newman enters her
first season as an assistant swimming coach for Wingate
University.
Newman is a 2007 Wingate
honor graduate and four-year Bulldog letter winner.
Newman and her teammates were a part of the first Blue
Grass Mountain Conference championship team in Wingate
swimming history in 2004, a feat they repeated in 2005.
A four-time All-BGMC performer, Newman set school
records in the 100 Back, 200 Back, 200 Medley Relay and
400 Medley Relay during her senior season.
Thanks to the efforts of Newman and her relay mates,
Wingate’s 200 Medley Relay and 400 Medley Relay team won
conference championships at the 2007 BGMC meet. For the
first time in school history, Wingate sent five women to
the 2007 NCAA Division II national championship meet in
Buffalo
At
the national championship event, Newman earned
All-American honors two times as the 200 and 400 Medley
Relay teams finished seventh and sixth, respectively.
The Wingate Bulldogs finished 11th overall in Division
II, another historic feat.
Outside of the pool, Newman
was a two-time College
Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic
All-American Scholar-Athlete
honoree. Newman helped continue the Wingate Special
Olympic Swimming Program as coordinator. In addition,
she was very involved on campus in Sigma Sigma Sigma
sorority. She held various officer positions in Tri
Sigma. Newman also participated in the University’s
Leadership Fellows program.
In
addition to her athletic and academic success, Newman
earned the Arthur Joseph “Pepper” Geddings,
Jr. Athletic Leadership Award
at Wingate’s 2007 athletic awards ceremony (The
Geddings award stands for everything that is right about
college athletics: athletic ability, scholarship,
leadership, citizenship and service).
She
also won the National Women in Sports Day award
presented to the most outstanding Wingate University
female student athlete both off and on the field.
Newman hopes to bring some experience and inspiration to
the Bulldogs this year. She hopes to help lead them to a
conference championship while assisting in all aspects
of the program.
